Probiotics & Prebiotics: The Basics

Probiotics & Prebiotics: The Basics

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that support the health and function of the gastrointestinal tract. When they’re alive, present in meaningful amounts, and reach the gut, they can support digestion, stool quality, and immune balance.

Not all probiotics do the same thing. Different strains have different roles, and effectiveness depends heavily on whether the organism survives the journey through the digestive system.

What are prebiotics?

Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that feed beneficial microbes already living in the gut. Think of them as fuel rather than organisms themselves.

They don’t add bacteria — they support the bacteria that are already there.

How they work together

  • Probiotics add or support beneficial organisms
  • Prebiotics help those organisms thrive

They’re complementary, but not interchangeable.

A common misconception

“More bacteria” or “higher CFUs” doesn’t automatically mean better results. What matters is:

  • whether the organism survives digestion
  • whether it has a meaningful function
  • whether it’s appropriate for long-term, daily use

The takeaway

Probiotics and prebiotics are tools — not magic. When chosen and used intentionally, they can support gut health in a real, measurable way.
